Richard Newell Associates specialise in advice on the design and implementation of cost-effective environmental resource surveys required for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process. We are also able to provide Expert Testimony in the Public Inquiry process associated with major infrastructure projects.
The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process is a regulatory requirement for all projects that are likely to have a significant impact on the environment on land and at sea.
It involves an assessment of 1) the environmental resources that may be affected by the project and 2) the impact that a proposed project may have on them. It also makes proposals on how, where there is unavoidable impact, the impact may be mitigated or compensated.
Estuarine and near-shore marine environments support natural resources of considerable economic and conservation significance, as well as historic and archaeological assets that require protection. Estuarine habitats often support migratory wildfowl populations of national and international significance that exploit rich the invertebrate food resources that characterise inter-tidal mudflats.
Richard Newell Associates can guide and advise you through the required Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.
Richard is currently Chairman of an Independent Science Advisory Panel appointed by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) to advise on issues related to experimental relocation of maerl habitat to offset the potential impacts of dredging of the approach channel to Falmouth Port.
Richard has recently completed an appointment as external reviewer of proposals submitted to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Marine Renewable Energy Knowledge Exchange Programme.
This book summarises current industry practice and the results of research commissioned through the Marine Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund (MALSF) and other sources.

Richard was appointed as Chief Scientist in 2013 by Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc and Exploraciones Oceanicas to advise on the environmental impact assessment of a major marine phosphate sands dredging project off the west coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico.
